How We Roll…
Rita’s Burritos, the concept, was born right here in El Paso, Texas. My brother, Gilbert, and I are El Paso natives. Gilbert graduated from Gadsden High School and I graduated from El Paso High (Go Tigers!).
We spent the entirety of our childhoods eating authentic Mexican recipes made for us by our mother, Rita, and her mother, Raquel. Most of our summers were spent deep in the heart of Mexico where, in those days, tortillas were always made from scratch and hand rolled every morning. Although it took us a while to realize, those things had an impact on us. “Tastes like home” is an expression we would regularly use.
Gilbert and I discussed Rita’s as a concept for years before acting on it. In early 2015 we committed to making it a reality. Gilbert left his employment and with the help of our very supportive wives, Darcie and Misty, we funded our first location entirely on our own because bank and after bank told us we would never make it. So with all the expenses paid for by us and a lot of help from a few of our really close friends who either provided guidance, general labor, trade labor, or just moral support, we opened Rita’s Burritos in Chandler, Arizona on December 15, 2017.
Chandler is where Gilbert’s work with Texas Roadhouse took him and where he has resided for over fifteen years.
We’ve learned that with either a great product or great service, customers will give you a chance. Providing both will usually bring them back.
